I do believe that in order to live a good & meaningful life one must remember & recognize past struggles and hardships. It's a way to track progress, see what has been achieved, and see what needs to be achieved. For example, a current hot topic issue is gay marriage. So far, 5 states have legalized it, but the rest have not. Eventually, when a larger amount of states have legalized it, there will probably be some sort of commemoration for that accomplishment. For the gay community, it will help them celebrate this huge step toward equality, but it will also serve the purpose of motivating them to make even more change.
I think that if one doesn't remember past struggles, the stories of those struggling will be lost through generations, and an important part of the human history will be lost. This is why it was important for many survivors of the Holocaust to tell their stories; such a thing must never fade away or be silenced. This is especially true because soon, the last of the survivors will be passing away of old age. Because they spoke, the world has remembered an important message.
